The Muyil Ruins are a place of mystery and deep meaning in Mayan history. Just 25km south of Tulum, the Muyil Ruins are what remains of a once thriving trade and religious center - one of the earliest and longest inhabited ancient cities on the eastern coast of the Yucatan. Artifacts, including bowls, vases, pottery and figurines found here date back as early as 350 B.C. Many of the structures and items which archaeologists recovered during the site's excavation paid tribute to Ixchel - the Maya goddess of the moon.

Masterfully constructed at the edge of Muyil Lagoon, in what is now the Siaan Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, the structures which remain are testament to the brilliance, resilience, and capability of the Mayans. To walk in this place is to walk through time - to see and touch the presence of a people who held deep reverence for nature, the cosmos, and mathematics.

Today, visitors to the archaeological zone can explore three distinct structures, each with their own legend and secrets. Researches have discovered a series of subterranean passages at this site, and hidden well within the jungle, is another series of structures that leave you wondering just how much more is concealed beyond the trees.

Outside the city, only a short walk through the jungle, you can take a boat ride into the Siaan Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. This sprawling lagoon holds a secret as well - Mayan's constructed a canal to join the Muyil Lagoon with its neighbor lagoon, Chunyaxche - this was the essential trade route which enabled the city of Muyil to serve as a trade and sea port. Both the Muyil Lagoon and Chunyaxche are fresh water - fed by the underground river system that covers almost the entirety of the Yucatan. After an inspiring boat ride through the tall grasses and mangroves, you can enjoy a lazy river float unlike any other in the world.
