Holy cow did the graphics for this game sizzle at the time! Capcom's sure-fire classic features the wavy-haired ninja Strider Hiryu on his quest through Russia, Siberia, an airship, the Amazon jungle and a space station called The Third Moon. His weapon is a "plasma sword" called Cypher and swings outward instantly, cutting through enemies like butter, and he can pick up robotic allies like the helpful Dipodal Saucers, and the unhelpful ones like the Hawk and Panther (the hawk just flies around hoping to ram into things and the panther hopes to charge into things, but the Saucers actually shoot when you swing your sword). You can also get a longer plasma sword (for 100 swings), energy restore or additional blocks of energy, bonus points (200 and 400), a rare invincibility/doppelganger power up, and a one-time 1up icon (in Siberia at the Electrical Tower). Don't fly headlong into your missions-- there are plenty enemies waiting to collide with you or shoot you. Since your sword swings so quick it's a good idea to just keep on swinging practically throughout. You might nail that enemy that was looking to surprise you as you move forward. Apart form just the incredible graphics, I was blown away by the zero-gravity areas and the giant magnetic sphere that you fly in circles around-- so mind-blowing! One complaint-- the movable ledges like the vines in the Amazon not only look cheesy with their blockiness, but when they swing around and it's hard to stay on them, you seem to fall THROUGH them, which looks and feels kind of.. off. Nevertheless, this a wonderful Capcom classic, and the Sega Genesis port was a real eye-opener!
