STORYLINE:
Angry protesters burned effigies of US President George W Bush in Srinagar, the capital of Indian-administered Kashmir, on Monday to protest against the bombing of one of Shiite Islam's most sacred shrines in Iraq.
Last week's bombing destroyed the golden dome of the Askariya Shiite shrine in Samarra, provoking a wave of sectarian violence that has killed nearly 200 people and pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war.
The protesters gathered outside the United Nations military observer's office in Srinagar and chanted anti-US slogans.
Local Shiite leader Aga Syed Hassan handed over a memorandum to the UN office, in which protesters condemned the desecration of the holy shrine as a direct attack against Islamic beliefs and demanded that the perpetrators be severely punished.
Jammu and Kashmir is India's only Muslim-majority state.
Muslims are India's largest minority community, forming some 140 (m) million of India's 1.06 (b) billion people.
Srinagar has been rocked by protests by Shiite Muslims ever since the bombing of the holy shrine in Iraq.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the bombing in a statement on Friday.
