The number of violence against nurses in the workplace is alarming, with over 5,200 members of nursing staff being physically harmed in Q2 2022. This has led to a 57% increase in workplace violence, with many nurses experiencing severe disabilities and psychological distress. The aftermath of these assaults has resulted in higher absenteeism from work and lower retention rates. Some nurses feel that their bosses do not provide adequate assistance and that administration is not doing enough to protect them. Campus safety officers should prioritize the wellbeing of workforce members above all other concerns.

To reduce the likelihood of being assaulted by patients, nurses should undergo training in personal safety and self-defense, ensure a safe environment of care, store potentially hazardous items safely, recognize warning signs, learn de-escalation techniques, maintain a cool demeanor, engage in team activities like the buddy system, get to know their patients, maintain effective communication, report incidents, and seek professional help if they experience worry and dread affecting their productivity.

The American Nurses Association and the American Hospital Association have put pressure on congress to approve legislation to safeguard the healthcare workforce. Healthcare organizations are encouraged to have training and policies in place to protect their workers from violence and abuse. If nurses feel in danger, they should not hesitate to ask for assistance or remove themselves from the situation until it has been resolved.
