✨ Look to the Empty Tomb ✨
Scripture: John 20:1–2; Matthew 28:5–6
This worship anthem was born out of the devotional series “A New Perspective: Look to an Empty Tomb” written by Barry L. Wingard, Ph.D., based on the sermon preached September 14, 2025, at Calvary Baptist Church, Lynchburg, VA, by Dr. Louis Beckwith Jr.
📖 The Story Behind the Song
Barry began this week intending to write devotionals about grief and sorrow — because grief has been a constant companion for so many in these difficult days. But in that Sunday service, the message shifted everything: “Look to an empty tomb.”
Like the women who came to the tomb on Easter morning carrying sorrow and despair, we too approach life weighed down. Yet the angel’s words shattered their grief: “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said.” (Matthew 28:5–6).
The empty tomb reframes our sorrow. It does not erase pain, but it tells us that pain is not the end of the story. Death does not have the last word. Hope is alive because Christ has risen.
That is the heart of this song.
The verses recall the story of that first resurrection morning.
The chorus becomes a rallying cry: “Look to the empty tomb! Our Savior lives again!”
The bridge calls us not only to see but to share — to refuse silence and proclaim resurrection hope.
This is more than a hymn. It is a declaration that grief is real, but resurrection is greater.

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
In the breaking of the morning, shadows fled away,
Mary found the stone was gone, her hope in disarray.
But angels clothed in glory spoke the words of life:
“He is not here, He is risen—Jesus is alive!”
[Chorus]
Look to the empty tomb!
Our Savior lives again.
The grave could not contain Him,
Forever He will reign.
Lift your voice and sing it loud,
Let nations join the cry:
Jesus is risen, Jesus is risen,
Alive and glorified!
[Verse 2]
The earth shook with His power, the stone was rolled away,
Light broke through the darkness, the dawn of endless day.
“Do not fear,” the angel cried, “the Lord has overcome!”
The victory is written: salvation has begun.
[Chorus – repeat]
[Verse 3]
O sinner, hear the story, the stone was rolled for you,
Grace is calling, chains are gone, His mercy makes you new.
Step into the morning light, redemption’s song is true—
The risen Christ has conquered death, and life is offered you.
[Bridge]
See the resurrected Savior!
Refuse to stay quiet!
Share the good news—His message unchanged!
Don’t hide your sin, step into His mercy,
The Risen Lord forever reigns!
[Final Chorus]
Look to the empty tomb!
Our Savior lives again.
The grave could not contain Him,
Forever He will reign.
Lift your voice and sing it loud,
Let nations join the cry:
Jesus is risen, Jesus is risen,
Alive and glorified!
[Outro]
He is risen… He is risen…
Jesus lives forevermore.

🌅 Devotional Reflection (Barry L. Wingard, Ph.D.)
“Grief is real, but resurrection reframes it. It does not erase the pain, but it gives us perspective. The women came to a sealed tomb but left with a commission. They entered mourning but departed rejoicing. This is what resurrection does: it transforms the landscape of our hearts.”
On this Monday perspective, we choose not to fix our eyes on despair but on the risen Christ. The headlines may scream of loss, bills may still remain, and sorrows may linger — but the truth of the empty tomb stands. Christ is alive, the stone is rolled away, and hope is forever secure.
