Sonic R is a 1997 racing video game developed by Traveller's Tales and Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Saturn, and re-released for Microsoft Windows in 1998. It was re-released for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube as part of the Sonic Gems Collection in 2005. The player takes control of one of ten Sonic series characters and participate in races on various Sonic-themed race tracks. The story focuses the characters' efforts to win a series of races and prevent Doctor Robotnik from stealing the Chaos Emeralds and enslaving the world.

The differences between the Saturn version and the PC version are huge. There are no weather changes on Saturn, and the controls are very unpleasant. It's also impossible to get both the Chaos Emeralds and the golden medals at the same time. Somehow the Emeralds won't count as collected and the game doesn't even make the statement of you either getting them or not. It is possible to collect both Emeralds and medals in the PC version though. So for a 100% completion I had to make a small detour through all the levels again to get the Emeralds so I can unlock the last track. The characters are quite unbalanced and playing as some of them definitely cannot be called fun while others are just OP. But hey, it's still a big part of our childhood :)
