The third and final speaker was Dr. Tan Loke Mun, an architect and director of ArchiCentre Sdn Bhd. He raised the point that one of the main issues we face today is overpopulation. He mentioned that the world population is growing at a rate of 225,000 people a day and that every 13 years there is an extra 1 billion people in the world. This puts a strain on natural resources and leads to inequality, poverty and extinction. Dr. Tan then outlined the basic needs of green global cities which are water, food, shelter and clothing.

Several initiatives and ideas in the fields of green cities were highlighted by Dr.Tan, such as the AWAS Shelter concept, the Walking City by Ron Heron and thoughts on reintroducing bamboo as a building material in Malaysia.
