What is Lorazepam?

Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine medication that works on the central nervous system to reduce excessive brain activity, helping in anxiety, agitation, and sleep-related conditions.

Anxiety disorders

Acute anxiety and panic attacks

Short-term management of insomnia (especially anxiety-related)

Agitation and restlessness

Pre-procedural sedation

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms

Adjunct in acute mania or severe anxiety states

-- Mechanism of Action

Lorazepam enhances the effect of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This leads to calming, anxiolytic, sedative, and muscle-relaxant effects.

Effective in acute anxiety and panic

Useful in short-term crisis situations

Less hepatic metabolism compared to some other benzodiazepines

Doses (Adults)

Anxiety: 0.5–2 mg per day in divided doses

Acute anxiety / panic: 1–2 mg as prescribed

Insomnia: 0.5–2 mg at bedtime

Elderly: Start with lower doses (0.25–0.5 mg)
