During the 1960s and 1970s, Israel was at war with Islamic nations, and had been using the FN FAL. The FAL had its limitations and Israel’s enemies were using reliable AK-47 type rifles. A design similar to the AKM platform was chosen, which was designed by Yisrael Balashnikov and Yakov Lior, but it wouldn’t sound right to call it the Balashnikov. It sounded too much like Kalashnikov, the rifle their enemies were using. He also wanted his name to sound of Jewish descent. So he changed his name to Yisrael Galili.
