I don't own any rights for the song or any parts of it.
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" doesn't need an introduction. The biggest Nirvana hit, the biggest song of the 90s, the song that propelled the band to stardom, the anthem of the generation, and some even say, the best song ever written. Whatever, nevermind.
The song was written in the spring of 1991. Kurt said that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was an attempt to write a song in the style of the Pixies:
"I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band—or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard"
Cobain came up with the song's title when his friend Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill, wrote "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his wall. Hanna meant that Kurt smelled like the deodorant "Teen Spirit", which his then-girlfriend Tobi Vail wore. Kurt said he was unaware of the deodorant until months after the single was released, and had interpreted it as a revolutionary slogan, as they had been discussing anarchism and punk rock.
When Kurt presented the song to his bandmates, it comprised just the main guitar riff and the chorus vocal melody, which bassist Krist Novoselic dismissed as "ridiculous". In response, Cobain made the band play the riff for an hour and a half. Eventually, Novoselic began playing the riff more slowly, inspiring drummer Dave Grohl to create the drum beat. As a result, it is the only song on Nevermind to credit all three band members as writers.
The first recording of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" happened in March 1991. The band was rehearsing the material to be recorded at the upcoming "Nevermind" session. The played at some converted barn in Tacoma equipped with PA and recorded this with a boombox. Then they sent the tape to Butch Vig who was going to produce the album. "Teen Spirit" from this rape can be found on the "Nevermind" deluxe edition and "Sliver: The Best of The Box".
In May 1991, Nirvana arrived at Sound City Studio to record "Nevermind". "Teen Spirit" was the song that impressed Vig the most. He suggested changes to the arrangement: moving a guitar ad lib to the chorus and shortening the chorus. The band recorded the basic track in three takes, and used the second take. Vig corrected some timing errors created by Kurt switching between his guitar effects pedals. Three vocal takes were recorded.
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was released to radio on August 27, 1991. On September 10, it was released as the lead single from "Nevermind. On September 24, the album itself was released.
The "Teen Spirit" video was filmed on August 17. The video received its world premiere on MTV's. By the end of the year, the song, music video, and the album had become hits. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Nevermind became a rare cross-format phenomenon, reaching all the major rock radio formats including modern rock, hard rock, album rock, and college radio.
The first live performance was on April 17, 1991 in Seattle; the last one was on February 24, 1994 in Milano.
As for the bassline, notice those little variations Krist is doing in the last bars of first chorus, second verse, and the guitar solo section. By the way, Krist did AMA on Reddit (r/Nirvana) and called the "Teen Spirit" bassline as his favorite/best one. I'd like to disagree.
Lyrics:
Load up on guns, bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over bored, self assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word
Hello, hello, hello, how low? (x4)
With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yay
I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group(tribe) has always been
And always will until the end
Hello, hello, hello, how low? (x4)
With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yay
And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it was hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind
Hello, hello, hello, how low? (x4)
With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yay
A denial
