Ghost Nets Removal…. last Friday one of our colleague saw a huge ghost net floating on a shallow reef next to Hafza Thila in North Ari Atoll. We got word of it via the Marine Biologist Facebook page and took action immediately. It’s important to get them out as soon as possible because marine life likes fish; turtles or dolphins can get entangled in it.
We knew that our diving school (Rasdhoo divers) would go the next day to Hafza Thila for a safari trip, we talked to them and it was a sure thing that we could join the trip to have a look and decide if we could take it out. We informed the guest about our presence on board, the ghost net and if they could help, depending on the size of it.
To make a long and sweaty story short: The ghost net was huge; it took us 4 trips with a surfboard to get it out of the reef and a pickup truck to get it off the jetty in Kuramathi. Thanks to all the guests and Rasdhoo divers who didn’t hesitate to help. We could not have done it without you!! It was great team work and we know it’s not self-evident to get supported in action like this, so thank you again to everyone involved!
