UNT Mathematics Millican Lectures Presents Dr. Martin Raum from Chalmers University of Technology
From Black Hole Mergers to Paramodular Forms

Black holes are celestial objects that correspond to singularities in spacetime as modeled by Einstein's General Relativity. While accessible to electromagnetic observation since 1971, gravitational detection only became feasible a decade ago. This breakthrough has sparked a surge in physics research, intertwining with and relying on input from mathematics.

We sketch the path from this contemporary area of physics to mathematics, specifically differential algebra, algebraic geometry, and number theory. By outlining the modeling process, we aim to showcase which contributions from mathematics could be directly beneficial to physics. We also trace the connections made among the various fields of mathematics that appear. We conclude with a theorem due to the speaker and Jan Bruinier, which is one piece of the framework that mathematics and physics need to build up. Overall, we offer a brief overview focusing on the broader perspective rather than details.

Martin Raum is Full Professor of Mathematics at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. Martin earned his diploma in mathematics at RWTH Aachen University in Germany in 2009 and earned his PhD in mathematics at the University of Bonn in Germany under Don Zagier in 2012. Martin works on modular forms and their applications in mathematics and physics, in particular string theory. In particular, he is interested in real-analytic automorphic forms, Siegel and orthogonal modular forms, and explicit methods for automorphic forms. Throughout his career, Martin has been awarded several grants from the Swedish Research Council. Recently, Martin was awarded the Wallenberg Prize by the Swedish Mathematical Society.
