Born in 1730, trained in martial arts, horse riding, sword fighting, politics, and languages, Velu Nachiyar became the first Indian queen to fight and defeat the British. With the support of Hyder Ali and the unmatched bravery of her women’s army led by Kuyili, she reclaimed her kingdom in 1780.
