KHECHEOPALRI LAKE - Located 150 Km from Gangtok and 30 Km from Pelling town, the lake is sacred for both Buddhists and Hindus, and is believed to be a wish fulfilling lake.

When you reach the lakeside, you can't help but feel an immense sense of peace. Most people who visit the place offer prayers to the lake. Either it is the quiet prayers of the people or the sight of Buddhist monks peacefully chanting prayers; it is impossible to describe the sense of peace one gets here. When they say silence is beautiful, it must be this.

Some say that the lake, when viewed from above, resembles a footprint. Some believe the footprint is that of the Goddess Tara Jetsun Dolma; the Hindus believe it is that of Lord Shiva; the Buddhists believe it is that of Lord Budha.

There’s a popular belief about Khecheopalri Lake that there can’t be any leaves floating in the lake water. In case of any stray leaves that happen to fall in the lake, birds do the job of picking them up. Whether this is an absolute fact or not, we don’t know. But what we know is that these local beliefs make a destination so much more interesting.
