Spoon rests are such useful little things in the kitchen. They help you keep the working surface less messy while cooking .

For my stoneware spoon rests of about 12.5cm in diameter for a ready-made piece, I take about 260g of clay.

I spread the disks to about 15.5cm and then use the wooden rib to raise the rim. The freshly thrown dish is about 13.5cm.

Tips:
Compress the disc well to avoid S cracks, its important!

Slow down the wheel when raising the rim.

Compress the rim well, to avoid easy chipping.

When making a lip openning, run your finger from side to side several times to lower it well, because the clay tends to return to its original shape while drying and you may end up with a too high lip and rocking spoons. I like the spoons to lay flat on the spoon rest.

I don't wire off the dishes. Instead I make clean undercut at the bottom with a pointy metal tool and leave dishes under plastic sheet for a couple of days, after which leave them to dry naturally. They pop off the wooden batts themselves. I then use a wet sponge to clean up the bottoms.

The tool I use to make grooves is my own, made from a small piece of zinc sheet. Any other tool or roller or stamp can be used to add texture. Or a simple swirl will do.

I love grooves because I like how the glaze breaks over the texture.
