The Kings of Hungary had pretty substantial colonization policies during the Middle Ages. One of the most numerous groups of settlers was the "Saxons" ("Sachsen" in German), originating from the most developed parts of Western Europe.

By the year 1100, the Kingdom of Hungary also contained Transylvania, conquered from the local tribes.
The royal domain at the periphery was poorly populated and uncultivated. The invitation of skilled colonists would have created three advantages:
• Military: Strenghtening the borders vs. invasions
• Economic: Prosperity of the province and taxes
• Political: Support given to the king vs. his rivals
First came the Szeklers, famous warriors from the East (1100-1150).
Then, on the initiative of King Géza II, colonists from the most developed areas of Europe were invited.
They spoke old German, but also old French and Flemish. A diverse world united under the name of “Saxons”
The colonization - especially that of the Germans - took place on a larger scale, in Central and Eastern Europe (areas inhabited by Slavic peoples).
Within the Kingdom of Hungary, the Saxon settlement areas were southern and northern parts of Transylvania, and the county of Szepes (Zips).
The colonization of the Saxons was continued by the successors of King Géza II, over a period of 150 years (1150-1300).
The advantages were not only on the side of the Hungarian kings. Future immigrants were offered privileges that were very tempting:
enough land for free
tax exemptions
election of priests and judges
administrative autonomy and rule by the „German law”
In Transylvania, the Saxon colonization took place in several stages.
1241…the Mongol invasion devastated the Kingdom of Hungary, including Transylvania.
During the reconstruction of the province, new Saxon settlers arrived.
So began the eight centuries long history of the Transylvanian Saxons.
