What is Integrated Science? | Introduction of Integrated Science (IS) Courses at DKU

Integrated Science (IS) courses are important divisional foundation courses for all science-oriented
students at Duke Kunshan. The purpose of these courses is two-fold:
laying a solid foundation in modern science
and showing connections and integration across academic disciplines.

Currently, the teaching model has three IS courses, or tracks – Physics, Chemistry, Biology –
each transmitting disciplinary knowledge and training scientific skillsets/mindsets rigorously;
meanwhile, they are also intended to cross-talk with one another in connecting and
integrating ideas, concepts, equations, theories and applications.

In the video, you will see the three IS courses all center around the essential
topic of “energy”, but discuss in the context in physics, chemistry and biology respectively;
and then taken together, we show how energy obeys common thermodynamic laws or has
similar applications in different systems and topics.
