The Formless Dance: Huangshan’s Ancient Taiji and the State of "No-Form"

“Any form is illusory. To see all forms as formless is to perceive true reality.” This teaching from the Diamond Sutra resonates profoundly with Master Huangshan’s core principle of ancient Daoist Taiji: “If there is fixed form, it is not Taiji.”

In Master Huangshan’s tradition, Taiji is not a set sequence of movements or standardized postures. It is a state of being—an uninterrupted flow of intrinsic energy, free from attachment to form. While conventional practice often emphasizes precise模仿 of external shapes, this fixation on “form” (相) ironically distances one from Taiji’s essence.

True Taiji, according to this ancient method, is like water—shapeless yet adaptive, moving according to inner dynamics rather than external templates. There are no rigid “frames” or preset techniques, only spontaneous expressions of energy in response to the present moment. This embodies the Diamond Sutra’s teaching of transcending attachment to self, others, living beings, and time.

Modern Taiji often becomes trapped in formalism—debating orthodox styles and perfecting postures while losing the living, changing nature of Taiji itself. Master Huangshan’s approach returns to the Daoist roots of wuwei (non-action) and naturalness. It is a practice of “unlearning,” gradually releasing fixation on form to arrive at a state of unrestricted freedom.

Ultimately, this formless Taiji reveals an inner aesthetic—a harmony and flow perceptible not merely to the eye but to the mindful body. It teaches us that in releasing attachment to form, we may touch the formless reality within, returning to the source that is both the nature of Taiji and our own innate being.
