Human needs are different then interests because they're fundamental to survival or personhood and therefore they're less amenable to compromise or negotiation
• Interests are often of an economic nature, human needs are far more visceral
• Reflect universal motivations
• Intrinsic to biological and physical survival, self-esteem and autonomy
• Human needs comprise the conditions that are necessary for social organizations to survive harmoniously
• Fully satisfied needs enable individuals to:
o Fully develop their potential
o Attain psychological health
o Become a whole developed person

Human Needs & Conflict
Human needs are at the CORE of all conflicts. People engage in conflict because they have needs that they can only attain by engaging in conflict
• When deprived of basic human needs, people engage in behaviors aimed at satisfying their needs
• When human needs are affected, deterrence does not deter
• Needs for recognition and identity tend to produce more violent behavior than material needs
• Conflicts rooted in human needs cannot be managed in the same way as conflicts rooted in parties’ conflicting interests, since they are not “compromisable”
When we sense that our human needs are being threatened, this sense can be conscious or subconscious, it can evoke a whole range of behaviors and responses that are relevant to the understanding of conflict. When we talk about basic human needs we are not just talking about threats to our survival or existence, it's about self-esteem, autonomy, identity, security, recognition, or status.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Human needs and conflict are closely linked. Human needs give rise to conflict often retractable and less amenable to compromise, requiring a distinct approach.
There are quite a few schools of thought about human needs but Maslow's hierarchy is the one that you're most likely to be familiar with. Developed in the late 1940s Maslow's hierarchy is a motivational theory that comprises a five-tier model of basic human needs, lower down in the hierarchy the needs must be satisfied before individuals can attend to those needs higher up.
From the bottom of the hierarchy upwards the needs are physiological, safety and security, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization.
Of course, there's plenty of criticism of Maslow's hierarchy much of which presents the argument that needs are not hierarchical. Especially that this model de-emphasizes the need of social connection and social networks by placing them too high up the hierarchy.

Theorists’ list of Human Needs:
Looking beyond Maslow's constructs there are some other basic human needs that seem to cut across all the schools of thought:
• Distributive justice- fair allocation of resources among all members of a community
• Belongingness/Love
• Identity- sense of self in relation to the outside world
• Security/Safety- freedom from fear and anxiety
• Personal fulfillment
• Cultural security- related to identity, the need for recognition of one’s language, traditions, religions, cultural values, ideas and concepts
• Participation- to be able to actively partake in and influence civil society
• Freedom- no physical, political or civil restraints
• Self-esteem
