At the final stage of the Memory Mines, Alice will battle the last stand of Bumby's power over her mind, his memory is losing control over her, its battling for survival, to not be forgotten, it's vulnerable and Alice is stronger than ever, she's no longer afraid.

You're battling a representation of the man who ruined your life, of course it has to be unsettling, at the end there is the relief of being about to get rid of something harmful you beared for too long, and the joy of self-love that act is.
