When Bilal wants to make the effort, few singers can match him. We see it in this concert filmed in 2014 at Moods in Zurich, where he rises to the level of the greatest voices in soul. It is all the more stunning because it is not always the case. We know that this talent is a mystery for whom our fascination doubles regularly from bitter disappointments, so-so albums (since 1st Born Second in 2001), and sloppy performances. This doesn’t prevent him from collaborating with the best, starting with the group from Philadelphia that reunited within the collective Soulquarians: Common, Questlove, James Poyser, Mos Def, Raphael Saadiq, and the late J Dilla.

They are the writers and composers, along with Bilal himself, of the majority of his repertoire. So it’s a family affair, which doesn’t prevent the singer from sometimes missing out. Capable of the worst, he is also one of the best, as this impeccable recording shows. A bit expeditious with his success, "Soul Sista", he raises the bar several notches with the other songs of the night, starting with overwhelming versions of "Sometimes", "Right at the Core", and "Levels". In these moments when his high notes give us goose bumps, Bilal embodies everything we expect from a modern soul man. This is why we will always forgive his misguided ways, while waiting for him to deign to reward us with concerts like this.
