One of the biggest mistakes people make is ignoring sun protection. Dr. Azim emphasizes that a major trigger for melasma is exposure to harmful UV rays and visible light. Most people only focus on UVB and UVA rays, but visible light, especially from screens and indoor lighting, can also worsen melasma. That’s why he recommends using a tinted sunblock, because it protects not just against UV rays, but also visible light. When it comes to melasma on face treatment, Dr. Azim shares that the best tinted sunblocks contain iron oxides, which are proven to block visible light. He also explains that not all sunblocks are created equal. For melasma, the ideal product must be broad-spectrum, with protection against UVA, UVB, and visible light. And it must be applied generously and repeatedly, especially if you’re outdoors or sweating. Another important part of melasma on face treatment is how and when to apply sunscreen. Dr. Azim shares simple tips for daily use: apply a good layer 20 minutes before sun exposure, reapply every 2–3 hours, and always include it in your morning routine, even if you're staying indoors. He explains that treating melasma isn’t just about fading dark spots; it’s about preventing them from coming back.
