Powdery mildew is one of the most common — and misunderstood — fungal diseases affecting cannabis and many other plants. Unlike other fungal pathogens such as Botrytis (gray mold) or Fusarium, powdery mildew is an obligate parasite, meaning it can only feed on living plant tissue. Because of this, it doesn’t kill its host outright; instead, it thrives on the plant’s surface, forming white, powder-like colonies that can quickly spread if left untreated.

This fungus survives by keeping its host alive — which also means it can be controlled more easily with surface treatments. Products like wettable sulfur, when used as a dip or foliar spray, are particularly effective in suppressing outbreaks, especially during the early stages of plant growth.

Fortunately, most strains of powdery mildew don’t colonize the floral tissue, focusing instead on stems and leaves. That makes early identification and treatment key to maintaining healthy crops and preventing contamination during flowering.
