These are my two shepherds and you can see the beautiful differences between them.

Moxie was a half working line and half show line German Shepherd, born to an expat breeder across the lake from where we lived in Guatemala.

She was born midnight black and the rich colors tinted her coat later.

Whimsy is from the scrublands of Southern California and all white, which is one of the distinguishing marks of the Swiss Shepherd.

They are also different ages.

Moxie was older here at the end and you can see it in her agility.

She was stiffer to leap up and slower to turn around whereas Whimsy has young joints and an adolescent’s lean muscles.

They were different as copilots too.

Moxie was usually sniper calm but might explode when antagonized by a passing cow or horse or burro.

Whimsy scans the scene more frenetic, desperate to match every smell with its corresponding sight and sound.

They are both shepherds, both my beloved companions and copilots.

And both so wonderfully different.

✱ K9 MOTO COCKPIT – Many copilots begin riding as early as four or five months but dogs take to it quickly and eagerly at all ages. There’s no ‘right’ age to start but seeing so many older dogs start or still riding warms our hearts most. Riding comfortably laying down allows them to enjoy being outdoors and all the incredible stimulus long into their golden days when they can’t do other activities.
