The drought in California is serious business. So serious that Governor Jerry Brown issued the first ever restriction on personal water use in the state. Yet, home water use accounts for just 4% of California's total water budget!

There is a sector that uses nearly half of all the water in California -- animal agriculture. Raising animals for meat, dairy, and eggs uses 47% of all of California's available water! (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/stephen...)

This is a huge problem because growing plant-based foods uses just a fraction of the water. In fact, fruits and vegetables on average use just 1/10th of the water to grow (http://www.waterfootprint.org/Reports..., and a vegan uses on average 18 times less acreage to support their life (http://www.cowspiracy.com/infographic).

The drought matters. And Californians can handle this problem by switching to a plant-based diet, to reduce the burden the real culprit -- animal agriculture -- exerts on their local water system. Don't buy the hype -- the personal water ban is largely useless. The real problem is raising animals for food.
