The power of capitalism returns!
CantWin is a File Code in Dark Star Edition that sets you to level 27, gives you all 128 badges, and the 5 unlockable stones immediately (all but Greed, Badge, and Rainbow). However, in return, it forces all encounters to be at least 4.5x difficulty, the equivalent of Super + Mega Curse. Equipping Curse badges does NOT stack with this multiplier, but if you equip Ultra + Mega Curse or all 3 Curses, you will do a fight on that respective difficulty instead of the innate 4.5x difficulty that CantWin forces.
Hallway Bowser has 80 Base HP and 1 Defense, with his HP becoming 720 on 9x. Due to the fact that he possesses the Dark Star, he gets +1 Attack after every round. Also, when he uses Star Shield, unlike the base game where he gets 4 Defense while it's active, here he's truly invincible, just like his final fight. While not present in this video due to the strat used, Bowser can Star Shield and attack in the same turn after he falls below 50% HP.
The base attack values for his attacks are as follows:
Nail: 4, hits 3 times & inflicts Poison if not blocked or interrupted (36)
Stomp: This is either 8 or 10, I'm not sure. He doesn't use it very much, & in the case of this video, even if he were to use it, he won't ever hit with it due to the strategy used. Regardless, it takes away a random battle command if not blocked or interrupted (72 or 90).
Fire: 12; this hits the Partner with a base damage value of 3 (99 & 27 respectively).
Star Wave: 4; this hits the Partner with a base damage value of 3 and also removes any active buffs Mario has if it hits him (36 & 27 respectively).
If he has Star Shield active, you double the base values of each of these attacks. Star Shield is first used on Turn 2, & then every 4 turns after if cancelled out right away. In addition, Bowser can also use Recover, which restores his HP. The base of this is 32 & it DOES scale up with Curses (max of 99). However, anytime he uses Recover on this difficulty, at least on RetroArch, the emulator will crash (I can't speak for other emulators, you'll have to test this yourself!). So, in order to get through this fight, I must KO him before he can use Recover.
The last time I fought Hallway Bowser, I unveiled the badge that can be an ace in the hole with the right strategy, in the form of Flower Coins. The reason Flower Coins makes 9x possible in this fight, as we saw previously, is that it enables you to play a lot more efficiently than standard strategies. The immediacy of having what is effectively 200 FP means that I don't need to spend my items to consistently restore my FP. I can go all out with attacking and not have to worry since I've got more than enough coins to pull off the moves and output the damage needed. Flower Coins synergizes best with Perfect Peril strats since Mega Saver reduces move costs by 15 coins per move by itself. This can be compounded with further cost reduction badges such as Perfect Saver, but here Mega Saver is the only one that's needed.
The basis of the strategy I used here is the same as the original 9x clear. Enable maximum damage output using Mega Bounce. I did make a couple changes here, but the overall aim of the strat is the same. That aim is to output 540 damage within 6 turns. Bowser is affected by Stop once here, allowing Stellar Nova Time Out to open the pathway of effectively blocking Recover. No other strat, barring full use of the Mega Bounce exploit, has the means to output 540+ damage in that few turns. The first roughly 180 damage is free because Bowser will not heal unless Mario is 25% more healthier than Bowser or unless Bowser himself is very low on HP. The latter case is added in Dark Star to prevent low HP percentage cheese strats.
I did make a couple changes from the original strat to this one. I forewent Double Dip and Dark Power this time around in favor of Triple Dip. This was specifically so I could use a Yoshi Biscuit and an Obsidian + Molten Shroom together at once. The Obsidian Shroom synergizes very well with Flower Coins because the Molten Shroom that it becomes has the same sell value as a Miracle Golden. That sell value is 240 coins, which Refund gives 180 back in battle. This means my damage output is effectively the same here despite not having the Ultra Boots or Dark Power in the build.
Beyond those auxiliary changes, this fight is effectively the same as the original 9x clear.
