A ring owned and designed by late rapper Tupac is the top lot of Sotheby’s third Hip Hop auction.
Tupac commissioned the ring after being released from prison in 1996.
“He had his godmother, Yaasmyn Fula, who was a Black Panther fly back and forth from Los Angeles to New York with his designs, meeting with the jewelers to made sure it looked the way he wanted it to. So, he very much wanted a medieval crown style. He wanted diamonds, he wanted rubies, he wanted gold. He wanted it to be elaborate," said Sotheby's Global Head of Science and Popular Culture, Senior Vice President Cassandra Hatton.
The rapper was inspired by Niccolo Machiavelli and “modeled his design after the crowns of the medieval kings of Europe in “an act of self-coronation.”
The auction house said the ring is the only piece of jewelry ever to hit the auction block that comes directly from someone close to Tupac. And that he wore it during his last public appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1996.
“The estimate on this ring is $200,000 to $300,000 (USD). That estimate has nothing to do with the materials. I mean, it is made of gold and diamonds and rubies. But when we put estimates on unique objects, the estimate is based on the history and the provenance, the value, the importance of the piece," Hatton said.
Other lots in the sale include items from Ice-T, Fab 5 Freddy and the Wu-Tang Clan.
Bidding will take place from July 18th until July 25th.
