What are the lowest-paying jobs in the UK? There are more than 5 million workers in the United Kingdom who are earning less than the hourly minimum wage set for their areas and the country. This is shockingly discovered in recent research by the Trades Union Congress (TUC). For the sake of this discussion, we will pick £29,009 a year as Britain’s average minimum wage. Unfortunately, those in the lowest-paying jobs in the UK earn much lower than that.
These people often feel squeezed financially and are in constant need and want. The irony of this is that these lowest paying jobs in the UK are often those requiring the most stamina and effort. Here are the 10 lowest jobs in the UK with their average pay in pounds sterling.
10. Nursery nurses
The 10th least paying workers in the UK are the nursey nurses. These usually are registered nurses or licensed practical nurses who have been trained to provide medical care for infants and young children. They do work as nursery nurses or nursery assistants dealing with cases involving young patients and their families, especially on children's wards. Nursery assistants can also be in this category of workers if they work under the supervision of qualified nursery nurses.
These professionals on one of the lowest jobs in the UK provide infant medical care, provide guidance to parents, and encourage young children’s development. They also work with gynecologists, obstetricians, and labor and delivery nurses to monitor the childbirth condition and the health of the newborn. They are generally required to ensure that children are happy, stimulated, and safe. A nursery nurse can communicate information to children by playing, supporting them during clinical procedures, and helping to maintain a child’s level of development during illness.
The average wage of nursery nurses in the UK is £18,628, way below the national minimum wage.
9. Fitness instructors
Other poorly paid professionals in the UK are fitness trainers and instructors. Their job is to lead, instruct, and motivate groups or individual students in exercise activities which include, but not limited to cardiovascular exercises for heart and blood circulation, strength training, and stretching. They work with all sorts of people regarding their age, skill levels, social status, and health conditions. They may also prepare or choreograph personal group classes.
In addition to their fitness training duties, they also do a variety of other tasks, such as clerical and administrative functions of managing the front desk, admitting new members, and giving tours of the facility. They also supervise the weight-training and cardiovascular equipment areas. Training for fitness instructors varies greatly. Training instructors must be able to communicate clearly, explaining specifically what trainees should and should not do.
As demanding as the job is, it is one of the lowest paying jobs in the UK. Fitness instructors’ average annual wage is £18,271. As of 2020, there were over 70,000 fitness instructors in the UK.
8. Launderers and dry cleaners
The job of launderers and dry cleaners are among the lowest paying jobs in the UK. We can understand this. Technology has made machines available at individual homes which can be programmed to perform some laundry tasks. This has reduced the demand for dry cleaners and pressers.
