Offence: Unlawful Access and Disclosure of Electoral Commission Data Without Consent
Sarah Bireete, a prominent Ugandan lawyer and civil society leader, has been remanded to Luzira Prison until January 21, 2026, following her appearance at the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates’ Court.
She is facing charges of unlawful access and disclosure of Electoral Commission (EC) data without consent, contrary to the Data Protection and Privacy Act. Prosecutors allege the offence involves the National Voters’ Register.
During court proceedings, the magistrate adjourned court for 30 minutes to allow Bireete’s lawyers to upload details of the sureties as part of her bail application. However, the court later deferred the bail hearing, leading to her continued remand.
