Surrounding residents have all been relocated in time, and no leakage has been found in a chemical plant blast in southeast China's Fujian Province on Monday evening, provincial authorities said.

"So far the fire is under control basically and surrounding residents have been relocated in time. All the injured are only slightly hurt and have received effective treatment. No pollution has been found through test from several major nearby villages. No waste water was found leaking from the plant," said Zhang Yiteng, deputy mayor of Zhangzhou City, at a press conference on Tuesday morning.

The blast occurred at 18:56 in a unit producing toxic paraxylene (PX) on the Gulei Peninsula in Zhangzhou City.

According to a work team tasked with coping with the accident, of the injured people, one was wounded at the site of the explosion and the others were scratched by broken window glasses due to the blast wave.

A total of 929 firefighters and 177 fire engines were mobilized to fight the fire in Zhangzhou, according to the deputy mayor.

The work team, led by Fujian's vice governor, set up its headquarters at site to deal with the accident, establishing eight groups for further investigation and the rescue work.

"So far no leakage has been found in the three burning tanks. And the surrounding tanks, pipe protectors and equipments were unaffected," said Zhang.

In addition, on the local government's request, the Nanjing Military Area Command dispatched some specialists and a chemical defense unit for the rescue mission on Monday evening.

Pictures posted by netizens on the Chinese equivalent of Twitter showing casualties were confirmed as being fake.

This is the second accident in 20 months at the same facility that produces paraxylene (PX), an industrial chemical used for making fiber and plastics.

The factory, which belongs to the Tenglong Aromatic Hydrocarbon (Zhangzhou) Co., Ltd, had an explosion on July 30, 2013.

During the country's annual parliamentary session in March, China's environmental minister argued that the construction of PX projects should be scientifically addressed and must pass environmental impact assessments.
