What are the essential functions of the kidney:
-- Excretion of Waste Material

The kidneys purify the blood by removing wastes. Each kidney transports urine from the bladder, where it is stored, to the urethra. The most typical waste products are urea and creatinine, but our bodies also need to get rid of a number of other things. The kidneys effectively filter out waste and dangerous chemicals from the body. And it is necessary for the body to function.

-- Formation of Hormones

Many hormones necessary for our bodies to operate normally are secreted by the kidneys. For instance, the kidney produces the unique hormone erythropoietin in human bodies. This hormone is produced insufficiently as kidney function declines.

-- Activation of Vitamin D

Several biological processes depend on vitamin D. The majority of the time, our bodies contain inactive forms of vitamin D, which our kidneys must slightly change in order for it to function. If our kidneys are not functioning correctly, there is a vitamin D deficiency, which causes muscle weakness and bone weakening.

-- Regulates Blood Pressure

The balance of salt and water is also maintained by our kidneys. If too much salt is consumed, the amount in the blood rises and the person's blood pressure increases. If too much sodium or salt is consumed, it is eliminated by the kidneys, preserving the proper range for blood pressure in the body.

Why is it not easy to detect kidney failure early?
Although 31 million Americans have kidney disease, most individuals with kidney disease are unaware of it because there are no symptoms in the early stages. One of the best ways to be protected from kidney disease is to know the risk factors and to get tested.
