The Visakhapatnam Sports Authority of India camp has produced 80 per cent of the boxers who represent AP in the national scenario today. If Bhiwani is considered to be the ‘Little Cuba’ of India, then the SAI (Sports Authority of India) sponsored boxing camp at the Port Stadium in Visakhapatnam can be called the ‘Little Cuba’ of Visakhapatnam.

The camp that was started in 2003, by SAI has produced 80 per cent of the boxers who represent AP in the national scenario today. A number of boxers in different categories from both the men and the women segments have reached the international scene and have brought laurels to the country, the state and this city. But neither the sport nor the camp has not got its due recognition
The camp picks up talent after a rigorous search. During the summer, the association conducts over 40 summer camps in various parts of the city, including a couple of them in the rural areas. After the conclusion of the summer camps, a novice championship is held to pick the best. The selected ones are then sent to another camp to participate in the state ranking tournaments and the best performers are then enrolled for the SAI camp.
Unlike in States like unjHaryana and Pab, where a boxer is recruited by the police department once he or she reaches the national level, the state of AP does not do so. Even smaller States like Manipur and Mizoram recruit boxing talent for their police department only lend moral and financial support to the boxers.”

The camp is open to all the categories like sub-juniors, juniors and seniors and for both men and women.
