In the 90s and 2000s, romantic comedies and Disney fairy tales painted love as a sugar-coated fantasy, with iconic films like "When Harry Met Sally" and "Cinderella." Today, Hollywood has shifted towards female empowerment, showcasing strong, independent characters like Elsa in "Frozen" and Elle Woods in "Legally Blonde." This change reflects broader cultural movements such as #MeToo and the Bechdel Test, which have pushed for more realistic and respectful portrayals of women. As we navigate modern romance, we must balance the fairy tale dreams of the past with today's empowering narratives, seeking partners who inspire us rather than complete us. Samara is a student at Francis Holland Sloane Square in London. She does Theology and Philosophy, Psychology and Drama A Level. She plans to study Drama and Film production, alongside music at university. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
