Hey everyone, Sir GoodEnough here! Today we’re tackling a little project at the Cottage – and it’s a really useful one. We’re adding a Deck Ramp Hand Rail to improve safety, particularly when ice and snow are around. It’s a
simple addition, but sometimes the smallest changes make a big difference, what’s more, it’s a great way to put some recycling to good use.

We sourced almost all the materials from the local Habitat for Humanity store – a fantastic way to reuse stuff, and it’s also pretty economical. Then, we grabbed some hardware from Menards. It was seriously hot today,
hitting around 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and all the sweat equity is entirely mine! Seriously, it’s tough work.

First, we had to install the new railing, and, consequently, some of our cameras didn’t record properly – the battery drained quickly. Furthermore, we had some issues with the wiring for the lights, though connecting those
low-voltage wires was surprisingly straightforward, and frankly, rather boring, and secondly, we discovered a crucial detail about the stringers we used.

What’s more, the stringers aren’t treated for ground contact, and that means they’re not designed for this kind of use. Unfortunately, they’re going to last maybe two years before they need replacing. I knew this was the
case when I installed them originally, what’s more, it’s important to understand the limitations of materials.
