G’day, I’m Andra Keay, the Managing Director of Silicon Valley Robotics, Visiting Scholar at CITRIS and the Banatao Institute at the Universities of California, and President of Women in Robotics and CoChair of the Black in Robotics Allies Committee.

I’ve been growing robotics startups since 2011 through Silicon Valley Robotics and the global robotics startup competition and accelerator program Robot Launch. Since 2011, investment into robotics technologies has gone from infinitesimal amounts, to becoming a core thesis of many venture funds, and Silicon Valley Bank itself has created a robotics startup division to nurture the increasing number of successful robotics companies.

When Silicon Valley Robotics started, there were only 60 robotics companies in the Bay Area, and we accounted for less than 5% of global robotics revenue. As of 2021 there are more than 600 robotics companies in the Bay Area, most of them less than five years old. Many of them have become unicorns in valuation, or beyond that. And companies that have bases in the SV/SF Bay Area account for more than 1/3rd of global investment into robotics technologies.

We’re still less than 5% of global robotics revenue, for now. But clearly we are where the category creators are. The companies of consequence, the new tech giants are being created right here, right now. We welcome Deep Tech startups from all over the world.
