Ведут ко мне коня; в раздолии открытом,
Махая гривою, он всадника несет,
И звонко под его блистающим копытом

A horse is led to me; and in an open expanse,
Shaking his mane, he is carrying the rider,
And sonorously under his glistening hooves
Rings the frozen vale and crackles ice.
But the short day fades away, and in a forgotten
Hearth again burns fire- and so the bright light flows,
Or glows only slowly, and I am reading in front of it,
Or I am nourishing long thoughts in my soul.

I like how here Pushkin contrasts space: a wide, cold expanse and a cozy, warm, closed room. The outside and inner world. And the fire in the forgotten fireplace: burning brightly, and glowing gently.

The images of the rider with the horse and the library are licensed from Adobe Stock. It is obvious that they are AI images. Yet it was so difficult to find a rider in a historical attire; this was the only one fitting, and no way to find an image with a person similar to Pushkin in real life. (I found a couple for Mickiewicz "Uncertainty", but also with difficulty, and for the poem "To Nanny", certainly an ahistorical image. Eh...

So, this is an anonymous 19th-century rider, not Pushkin. Pushkin was of African heritage and was quite often whitewashed in portraiture. His real appearance was more African. His ancestor was an African, kidnapped from modern day Cameroon, a slave boy who was gifted to Tsar Peter the Great. The boy has proven exceptional intellectual abilities, more than the tsar's own son, and was educated in France, became a general and was helping with political reforms in Russia. He became part of the nobility. And Pushkin became the father of Russian literature.

Pushkin got in trouble with the tsar, one thing was that the tsar ordered him to marry. Pushkin started to conceal his African heritage, in fear he wouldn't get a suitable wife otherwise. The last portraits, women, one is his wife, Natalia Goncharova, and the darker lady is their daughter. Portraits are painted by Makarov. Proximity to power carried on by his descendants: some of his female descendants married into Russian and British royal families.

Pushkin was harassed because of his ancestry, already in school as a boy. He also wrote a book about his African ancestor.

Another writer, as a descendant of African slave (his grandmother) was Alexandre Dumas the author of "The Tree Musketeers." His father was a general under Napoleon, and "The Count of Monte Cristo" is the novel disguising the social injustice suffered by his father, political prosecution. A more concrete shorter book is "George", written by Dumas before "The Count of Monte Cristo."
Another mixed heritage general under Napoleon was Wladyslaw Franciszek Jablonowski, from a magante family in Poland. His father was also from Cameroon, was a valet of his mother. "Prince" Jablonowski included Wladyslaw Franciszek in his family, declared him his own son. The power of love. The siblings of Alexandre Dumas father were not as lucky: Dumas' grandfather sold his mixed heritage children, and kept only Thomas-Alexandre. Dumas was the name of the African grandmother of Alexandre Dumas, as his father didn't want to have the name of his own treacherous father.

Jablonowski was a classmate of Napoleon and was harassed by him for his heritage. During the Haitian Revolution, he and the Polish soldiers were sent by Napoleon to fight on the French side. Upon arrival general Jablonowski got infected with yellow fever and died. Polish soldiers took the side of the Haitian slaves. The famous Polish icon, the Black Madonna of Czestochowa, is part of religious syncreticism now in Haiti.

Another mixed heritage soldier, a composer, virtuoso violinist, conductor and a master fencer was Joseph Bologne Chevalier de Saint-George. He was also harassed.His compositions were forgotten, but are now rediscovered. His mother was an African slave, but his father was good to his son, was a loving father, provided a good education, and kept his mother in the same home. Alas for societal reasons, she was not officially the mother of Joseph...
