In this workshop, participants learned about the core elements of the European Union: its history, member states, and institutions. The first half of the workshop was dedicated to understanding the historical development of the EU, and its treaty-making process. In the second half of the workshop, participants explored the basic functions of the EU institutions and how they relate to member states, in addition to discussing the so-called "democratic deficit".

Workshop Leader: Joseph Lacey

Joseph Lacey is a Fulbright Schuman Scholar, and a researcher at the European University Institute in Fiesole, Italy. Joseph is completing research on the structural basis of the EU's democratic deficit at Princeton University.
