A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that prevents pregnancy by cutting and sealing the tubes that carry sperm. The procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia.

How it works: The vas deferens are tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra. During a vasectomy, these tubes are cut and sealed. Once cut, sperm can't get into the semen or out of the body.
Why it's done: Vasectomies are usually performed as permanent birth control.

Risks: Vasectomies have a low risk of problems.

Follow-up: After a vasectomy, you'll need to have follow-up semen tests to ensure there's no sperm in your semen. A semen analysis is usually done 8 to 16 weeks after a vasectomy.
