Greg Moore Remembered (BCTV Special, November 1999)

As I've been going through my tapes looking for funny or interesting commercials and news segments, I had a feeling this one would show up eventually.

Greg Moore was a race car driver from the small town of Maple Ridge, BC, and he was my hero. I was deeply into watching F1, Nascar, and Indy Cart as a pre-teen. Go-Karts were a form of expression as I wasn't old enough to get behind the wheel of a real fast car, but I always watched the races and always cheered for Greg.

One of my most cherished memories is around August 1999. A new Canadian Tire opened down the road from my house, and Greg Moore was going to be there to sign autographs! My mom took me down there and we found an empty table. Saddened, we went to leave when he appeared again - he'd just gone on break! And there was nobody else there! I got to speak to my hero, got two autographs, and even shared a Timbit. The joy I felt that day was the strongest I'd ever felt. I got to meet my hero.

Two months later, he was dead. One of the youngest drivers ever to hit a podium was killed in a horrific accident on October 31, 1999.
