Kim’s ties to the area were marked by an interesting occurrence. On September 12th, 1979 his brother was operating in the park about 20 miles away from Divide Creek performing fish surveys when he ran into a sow grizzly with cubs. He retreated up a tree to escape the sow’s fury, but she caught him before he could get high enough for safety. Pulling him from the tree the sow bit him several times before he played dead. Seeing she had disabled the perceived threat, the sow took her cubs and fled the area, leaving Kim’s brother with serious but nonfatal injuries.
After spending the day at Cameron Creek, Kim and Jane returned to their campsite along Divide Creek. They enjoyed dinner and conversation before retiring to their tent for the night, to catch up on some rest.
In the early morning hours of July 24th, around 4 AM, the young couple's camp was under investigation by a hungry young grizzly. It had stealthily approached along the trail before detecting a likely, familiar scent in the air. As it sniffed Kim and Jane’s tent it took in data that triggered something primordial in its ancient programming, something in the human world that would be described as evil.
The next morning park ranger Jerry Ryder was informed by the KOA attendee that there may be illegal campers along the creek. Around 2 PM he discovered Kim and Jane’s illicit campsite, or at least what remained of it. As he surveyed the tattered tent and scattered belongings he noticed blood, lots of blood.
About 60 yards away from the camp he found the remains of Jane and only a few yards from the tent he found the remains of Kim. Jane’s body had been savagely mauled and partially consumed and Kim’s body was significantly mauled and also partially consumed.
Ranger Ryder radioed an alert to the headquarters unleashing a shockwave of sadness and activity. Snares and culvert traps were immediately dispersed along Divide Creek and visitors were ordered out of the area.
Tribal members were assembled into a hunting party and tracked the grizzly for several miles back to its den. It took 8 shots from their high-powered hunting rifles to bring this grizzly to the ground for good. They were convinced that they had killed the bear that had ambushed and eaten Kim and Jane when they noticed its fur was covered in blood.
The grizzly’s carcass was taken for analysis, along with scat left near the attack scene. Hair that matched Kim and Jane was pulled from its intestines and feces, proving the bear had fed on their remains. Their blood in its fur proved that it had killed them. The death of the bedeviled bruin brought its reign of terror to an end.
Following the fatal attack on Kim and Jane, it was found that park and tribal authorities failed to notify the public of the problem bear. Their death led to needed changes to bear management and public access to information.
Regarding the cause of the grizzly’s predatory attack, investigators pointed out that during Kim and Jane’s post-mortem examinations, it was revealed that the couple had not had sex, and Jane was not menstruating at the time of the attack. I mention this because there is lore about bears possibly being attracted by women during menstruation, or the smell of fluids exchanged or expelled during human copulation. This possibility was excluded from being a contributing factor in the attack. The grizzly was navigating a trail that it utilized to access a dump for feeding when it discovered Kim and Jane’s campsite. It was not protecting a cached animal carcass and there were no cubs observed anywhere near the attack location. Speaking of cubs, our Cub Tier membership on Patreon, linked below will give you ad-free early access to our episodes and the $3 per month goes a long way in helping me continue to produce educational and entertaining content like this.
In a public statement following the attack, rangers commented that they do not make the park safe for visitors at the expense of bears. Acceptance of possible contact with bears must be understood by visitors any time they enter the park, especially when disregarding campsite regulations.
Glacier National Park hosts approximately 300 grizzly bears over its 1583 square miles, today. This is a bear density of about 1 bear for every 5 square miles which is a high density. The park draws about 3 million visitors each year, but only a fraction of that number venture into the backcountry. Frankly, it is surprising to me, and a testament to the grizzly's tolerance for human presence, that there are not more attacks in the park.
