Well, this is it. The day I uploaded this video was the last day for Super Mario Bros. 35 as we know it. Most people are predicting doom and gloom, though perhaps I am more optimistic about it: My prediction is that later, Super Mario Bros. 35 will return in a newer, better form. Maybe it will have other 2-D Mario platformers of the NES era built in, and you won't know which game you're playing until it begins. Or at least the Super Mario All-Stars makeover. Or maybe it'll just allow more people in, like Super Mario Bros. 36 or something.
It won't necessarily show up immediately, but I very much doubt Nintendo's done with this concept yet.
Match #1
Mode: Special Battle
Starting Course: 1-3
Character: Mario
This was both the "World Count Challenge" and the "Variety Battle Finale" events going on at once, where all 32 courses are selected at random, though some seem to be rare, like 8-4, but the World Count Challenge also asks everyone playing to also collct 350 million Coins collectively. Considering this Special Battle begins you with 99 Coins (is this a reference to Tetris 99?) and you get a lot fo spoils from players defeated along the way, this would've been a fast way to collectively meet the goal. As you can see though, you can get plopped into difficult courses very early on, as immediately after 1-3 was 8-3, which means lots of people will be eliminated in a hurry, and whoever remains gets to fight through a herd of Hammer Bros.

5-2 was something that came up a lot when I was playing. I don't know if it's naturally more common or if it's just me, but there are Hammer Bros. in this course, and this game allowed them to follow Mario rightward as he continues through a stage. They can jump over stuff too, so it's important you dispose of them, or at least lose them in a Warp Pipe. In any case, take a look at that DRWISTERIA go! That's a true Super Mario Bros. 35 master at work. Dr Wisteria slays even courses like 8-1, speeding through these tough courses like it's nothing.

Character: Mario
The one thing worse than a barrage of Hammer Bros., however, is a barrage of Lakitus. I don't think I've ever shown a flock of them wander into my game, so here's what they look like and how insanely difficult it is to deal with them. Even an early-game course like 2-1 becomes unmanageable. You either have to get a POW Block to remove them and make them someone else's problem (as is what happened to me), or you get in a Warp Pipe to remove them without them respawning in some other's game.

Character: Luigi
You may have noticed I added in one more descriptor for each match, which is the character I begin with. Most people will never realize, I would reckon, that you can play as anyone but Mario. Luigi is unlocked by clearing all 32 courses at least once. Afterward, hold L when selecting a course in a 35-Mario Battle or from the main menu in a Special Battle, and don't let go until the battle begins, and you'll start as Luigi. He plays exactly the same as Mario, and Fire Luigi looks identical to Fire Mario. In addition, if you choose to play again, you'll have to hold down L or you'll begin the next battle with Mario instead of Luigi. If you didn't know about this now and haven't cleared all the courses, there won't be much time to try to unlock him...or at all if you're not watching this on the day of upload.
