A powerful bomb cyclone has hit the northern United States triggering extreme winter weather across the Midwest and the East Coast. Blizzard conditions freezing temperatures strong winds and heavy snowfall have disrupted daily life and travel during the busy holiday season.

Reports suggest that nearly 27000 electricity customers were left without power with Michigan being the worst affected. Air travel also faced major disruption as more than 9000 flights were delayed and hundreds were cancelled across the United States.

In this video we explain what a bomb cyclone is how it forms through the process of bombogenesis and why it creates dangerous conditions. The storm rapidly intensifies when cold Arctic air clashes with warmer air from the southern United States causing a sharp drop in air pressure and extremely strong winds.
