Old friends is perhaps one of the shortest songs recorded by Simon and Garfunkel, but very much a work of art. It conjures up evocative images of two old men reminiscing about their youth while sitting on a park bench.
It appeared on their fourth studio album, 'Bookends' (1968). On the album, it segues into the following song "Bookends Theme (Reprise)" with a single high, sustained note on the strings. "Old Friends" and "Bookends" were also released on the B-side of the "Mrs. Robinson" single, issued on April 5, 1968, by Columbia Records. It's a very simple two chord introduction, but instantly recognisable.
