When Roye England moved to Upper Wanborough in 1925 he lived in the vicarage. Very close by were several buildings that were undergoing substantial changes that he thought were detrimental to their appearance and to the look and feel of the community as a whole. The modernisation of both of these buildings energised Roye to start to survey existing vernacular buildings with the intention of making models of them, and this eventually led to the founding of Pendon Museum.
