Talo Meren Rannalla - Acoustic Kauko Röyhkä & Narttu Cover

I am going to venture a guess: you have never heard a song sung entirely in Finnish. Here is your chance, because I have covered the 1986 dark pop classic called Talo Meren Rannalla (The House by the Ocean) by Finnish artist Kauko Röyhkä & Narttu a slightly cheeky translation of which might be Carl Arrognt & Bitch. It is one of my all time favourite songs by anyone.

Arrognt is deliberately misspelled. Consult your friendly neighbourhood Finn for an explanation.

The original and superior version, written by Kauko Röyhkä, can be found here and as you can tell, mine isn’t that different:    • Talo meren rannalla

I have translated the lyrics to English as closely as possible, but some liberties had to be taken.

The house by the ocean, an enigma to many
I’ve been waiting for so long, I need to get there
The house by the ocean, an enigma to me
I step from the shadows of the trees into the sunlight
Away from the shadows of the trees

The house by the ocean, made of iron and glass
Something is willing it to happen, dragging me towards it
Something else is fighting back and tearing at my clothes
”Boy, you’re not fit to deal with it
Boy, you’ll never be fit to deal with it”

Perhaps the house is locked
And no key exists
But if I turn away
I will never know of the wonders within

The house by the ocean, an enigma to many
I am climbing up the stairs, the door is closed
The door remains closed, and will not open for me
I step away
The wind blows from the wide ocean
The wind blows from the wide ocean
The wind blows over me
And will never leave me
