The Pilot Custom 742 is a workhorse of a pen that is positioned in the middle of Pilot's "Custom" range of fountain pens - its roughly in between the Custom 743 and 74. It offers a "traditional" or "classic" alternative to the modern-looking Pilot Custom Heritage 912 which shares its Pilot #10 nib range with.

As the Pilot Custom 74 feels too small to me - nib size and pen size - I consider this as a good entry point to the Pilot Custom range for people who prefer larger pens (and nibs).
