Check out the art show at the Saint Arnold’s brewery. Here’s the history about the art cars. Early Days (Pre-1970s): People have been decorating their rides for ages, but the art car movement as we know it started taking shape in the late 20th century.
1970s: A Spark of Rebellion: Artists started pushing boundaries. The "Hippie Van" era saw VW buses transformed into rolling canvases of peace and love. The Houston Art Car Parade, a cornerstone event in Houston's cultural landscape, officially began in 1988. However, the concept of art cars and the initial gatherings of artists exploring the idea emerged in the early 1980s, with early examples like the "Fruitmobile" and exhibits like "Collision" at Lawndale Art Center. The 1988 parade, organized by the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, featured 40 art cars and drew 2,000 spectators, marking the official start of the event.
