In late 2012 I went to South America, mostly to document the Santiago rubber tire metro and the old trolleybuses of Valparaiso. With some creative planning I could also hit Lima and Buenos Aires. Buenos was mind blowing and I only went there as a result of one airline going out of business and changing my plans. Good thing because I caught the end of the 100 year old subway cars with less than six months to spare (was there in 2002 also). If I ever figure out the right music for it, I will post the video. The Lima footage was forgotten as other projects stole my attention. Now, hardly four years later, the Lima metro looks very different than when I rode the less than one year old starter line. Most of the fleet is newer green cars and they are packed all day long. In 2012 only the original red cars were running and ridership was moderate.

The people at the hotel only vaguely knew where the new electric was located. They put me in a cab and I went inland from the coast on a 20 minute ride. Even the cabbie wasn't clear about where it was. Finally we reached one of the intermediate stations on the new rapid transit elevated. I was eager to enter, but it took about 20 minutes to do so (explained in the video). The cars looked very boxy and utilitarian, though the stations were simple yet pristine. It turns out that over two decades were required to open the first segment, due to severe corruption and malfeasance at the highest levels of Peruvian government. The cars were delivered 25 years ago and mothballed. The opening in 2011 was gradual with little fanfare. It seems that the line was not really ready to operate at its full potential and ridership was kept at bay with high fares and bureaucratic barriers, such as I experienced. So what you will see is a late 1980s designed metro preserved in amber and presented as it appeared in near infancy.

I have only found low quality random clips of the Lima metro, and almost nothing of its early days. Also not much of its expressway median BRT, also opened in 2011, which I show. I was only there for two days and would have enjoyed living there for a week. As always, nobody gave me a hard time, the climate was comfortable and the possibilities for sightseeing endless. There is much more to Peru than GD Machu Picchu.

Music is by the very aptly named Traffic Sound, a Peruvian psych rock super group of the early 1970s singing english lyrics and featured extensively on the Trainluvr channel. Their unique sound deserves preservation and maximum exposure.
