If you follow my channel, its pretty obvious that I enjoy recording these soundcheck videos. In a way, you get some sort of insight into my journey of constantly 'still' learning how to record drums better, and also discovering ways to also capture the natural tones out of drums. I am finding that I am relying less and less from EQ and effects compared to past recordings. Specially as I 'soundcheck' and try to demonstrate the natural sound of drums and cymbals. And what better way but to test different brands / models / series of drums and cymbals to test my knowledge. So here we are, recording a beautiful 14x4.75 Noble & Cooley Alloy Classic' (cast Alum drum) but also, the legendary Pearl Export (late 90's series) drums. Pearl drums are a brand that I definitely haven't been versed in. Although I've owned (and still do) several snares in my time, when it comes to drum kits. I've always stayed away from Pearl - purely because I found it too common. But there is of course a reason for that, and that is, to put simply; Pearl knows how to make the! Whether you want affordable / premium / custom, they know their stuff. And I didn't learn anything different here, the Pearl Export easy to tune and record. I went for low/big sounds while also taking advantage of the control that the EVANS EC2 batter heads are providing. Sonically, these drums were right where I would have any drum for recording. Impressed.
