Why You Should Bottom Water Your Houseplants!

I first started bottom watering my indoor houseplants when I got my first Watermelon Peperomia, Peperomia Argyreia, and was told that I HAD to water from the bottom or it would rot – and so the method entered my plant care repertoire, and has never left.

Now, of course, watering is a fundamental aspect of plant care, and the method you choose can have a significant impact on the health and vitality of your houseplants.

Bottom watering is not a new idea, and you may already be doing it without knowing it. Basically, it is any method where the plant absorbs water from the bottom up, instead of top down.

Why I like to bottom water? This method encourages healthy root growth and prevents water from sitting on the plant’s leaves, which can lead to fungal diseases and rotting!

What are the benefits of Bottom Watering?
Promotes Healthy Root Growth: Bottom watering encourages roots to grow downward towards the water, resulting in a stronger and more extensive root system.

Prevents Overwatering: By allowing the plant to absorb water as needed, bottom watering reduces the risk of overwatering and root rot. With bottom watering, the soil absorbs as much water as it needs – and the roots absorb the water from there. Overwatering is usually the first mistake a newbie plant parent makes, myself included!

Easy Way to Fertilise: Drop your liquid fertiliser straight into your bowl of water and dip in your plant. This is a great way to ensure your plant is getting even nutrients.

Reduces Fungal Diseases and Some Pests: Keeping water away from the plant’s foliage minimises the risk of fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and leaf spot.

Bottom watering also helps to deter fungus gnats. Fungus gnats are attracted to the wet topsoil of a plant and breed in it. If you bottom water, the top layer of soil should stay dry, meaning your gnat problem should quickly go away as well.

Improves Soil Moisture Distribution and Prevents Dry Spots: Reverse watering ensures that water saturates the soil, reaching the plant’s roots more effectively. You would be surprised how much of your soil stays dry when you only top water.

Reduces Soil Compaction and Hydrophobic Soil: The upward movement of water helps loosen compacted soil, promoting better aeration and root development. This means bigger plants!

Frequency: I bottom water weekly in summer and fortnightly in winter for most house plants. For cacti and succulents, I water monthly or less.

Duration: I leave my plants submerged in water for five – ten minutes each, and that has worked for me for years. I then let the plant drip dry before I pop it back in its decorative planter.
I do adjust this timing depending on the size and dryness of the plant.

Whilst I go for a quick dip for my smaller house plants, for my larger ones I fill up the tray or saucer they are on. This is still bottom watering and is a great option for people with big or heavy plants.
I also use bottom watering when I travel. I pop my plants in the bathtub and in bowls to ensure they stay hydrated whilst I am away.

Whether you prefer to top water or bottom water, the most important thing to remember is to not overwater your plants.
